    1,000 one-on-ones - Independent study is one of the distinct hallmarks of a Dartmouth education, with 60 percent of undergraduates taking advantage of the opportunity. Dartmouth faculty direct more than 1,000 one-on-one independent studies with undergraduate students every year. Liana Chase '11 and Peter Shellito '09 are two students now engaged in one-on-one projects.

    A giving spirit - As a child, Dartmouth custodian Paphanh Sithavady had to look after her younger siblings following her mother's death, and was not able to attend school. "I had always wanted to go to school, to learn," says Sithavady, who moved from a refugee camp in Thailand to New Hampshire with her husband and children in 1980. "I couldn't do that, but now that I have a better life here, I want to be able to help people in Laos achieve this dream." How? By helping to rebuild her husband's village's schools.

    - The Dartmouth College Charter was officially signed 239 years ago, on December 13, 1769, in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Developed with persistence and considerable political skill over a period of years, it was a document that was not easy to come by.

    Coming to our senses - The College Board has issued a report on what the United States must do to regain its global competitive edge in higher education access, admissions and success. Dartmouth President James Wright was part of the 28-member commission that wrote the report, released Dec. 10 in Washington, D.C.

    Top tech toys - This holiday season, "Kids are going back to basics for their holiday toys, and manufacturers are responding," says second-year Tuck School of Business student Kirstin Egenes. Egenes is one of six Tuck students who have issued the "Top Tech Toys for 2008" list. Toys under $25 that mix basic fun with technology topped the list.

    Running man - To say that fifth-year senior Ben True '08 successfully combines competitive running and cross-country skiing is an understatement. In his Big Green career, True has been an All-American in cross-country running in the fall, cross-country skiing in the winter and outdoor track in the spring. He's also a sub-4:00 miler. True talked recently with Running Times about how he combines the sports and eases the transition between seasons.
